Netflix and Steam had a baby that wants to play with you……

Square Enix, the company behind the Final Fantasy series, as well as just about every JRPG from my childhood, has launched a new game streaming service called “Core Online.”  The title makes it pretty clear the type of gamer they’re targeting.  I admit, that when I heard about Core I assumed they were trying to compete with Steam.  It seems they are taking a very different approach.

There are hot singles in your area, waiting to be shot. All you need is a credit card.

Rather than buying the game and downloading it locally, Core online takes a Netflix approach, allowing you to play the games for a time remotely.  You can purchase individual game levels, or the games themselves within the service to have unlimited playtime without adds.  While this certainly has amazing potential to allow people to play console games for consoles they don’t own, it remains to be see if this is a cost effective way to play these games.  I’m not surprised to see a lack of Final Fantasy games on their front page.  Can you imagine running out of time or getting an advert in the middle of fighting Sephiroth?

We know you can’t afford to buy these games, but have you considered buying a new car?
