Restaurant Roulette:Whisknladle

How do you choose from a list of 208 San Diego restaurants that participated in restaurant week? It’s not easy!

First we sorted the restaurants by location. That helped us eliminate location over a half hour drive. Then we crossed out restaurants that we have already eaten at. That cancelled out the first hundred.

Then we pulled the entire higher cost ($30-$40.00) menu (why not)and reviewed each offering. Finally down to 10

We decided on La Jolla, since the weather was so beautiful and the shores would make a good walk to digest our impending consumption. That’s when we made our final decision. The restaurant we choose was offering a full menu not just a planned menu.

The winner   was Whisknladle At 1044 Wall Street in La Jolla. It has open air table seating with additional seating at the bar. Well lit (for us older generation) menu reading and casual conversation was perfect.

We choose to sit at the bar since it was apparent that many others made the same good choice we did.

Walking into the bar a huge stainless steel wine sculpture adorns the room. We knew we were home.

Comfortable seats but better than sliced bread was our bartender/waiter David. He actually took time with us, finding out who we were and what made our decision to try the restaurant. He helped us make our meal decisions to compliment the fine wines they serve. My companion Mark said he was impressed at the wine selection. They carry exceptional wines. Comfortable atmosphere, Great décor. Great wine and exceptional service, what more could we ask for. The cutting board starter was above the usual, cheese meat and cracker combo. Interesting sauces, pork mouse and capers rounded out this board ample enough for two to share. But the best was yet to come. I have gone to a hundred restaurants in search of the perfectly cooked scallops. I finally found them. Hats off to the chef.  Perfect. We rounded off the evening with a vanilla sorbet with cookie that that complimented the meal.

We had great conversation with several people we met there that had no idea it was restaurant week and ended the evening with our last sip of wine before we left. What a perfect evening. This was a 5 star experience. And I took the extra effort to tell the Manager owner that David had made our experience extra special. He was excellent and made the entire evening that much better. BRAVO Whisknladle…I will be back.
