***ROMANTIC SPOT ***

3/5  Stars  A great selection of wines from around the world pairs well with their menu

Not sure what I liked most about this really cute little restaurant; the atmosphere or the food. This intimate romantic La Mesa restaurant features a cozy patio, comfortable seating and my favorite spot the bar, where silent films are always playing. The place has the summer cottage feel with stone walls, wooden beams, racks of wine everywhere.  It gives an old world charm that is unique to other restaurants in the area.

The Mediterranean inspired wine country fare has a Tuscan vibe.  A great selection of wines from around the world pairs well with their menu. The appetizers and dessert choices live up to their reputation. An aged cheese board is a favorite  appetizer of ours. They have a signature flatbread pizza with prosciutto, caramelized onions, and Gorgonzola that is Italy at its best. A nice pan seared pink salmon or Tuscan-style New York steak top the list of yummy entrees.

But I have to mention that the bartender and servers are all friendly and helpful. The bartender was knowledgeable and suggested the best wines. We enjoyed sitting and talking to him. Get to know your bartender because he has the 411 on the latest in greatest on wines and other alcohol (after all, they need to keep up with the latest and greatest). The waiters were quite familiar with their menu and confident with the choices they suggested.

The place was a bit crowed for a Wednesday so that is a good sign that La Mesa loves the Vine Cottage and so did WE. There ere a few setbacks;  credit card machine was inoperable so they were only accepting cash. I would suggest they tell the patrons before they order. That could be embarrassing to the patron without cash. Despite their shortcomings, Vine Cottage is a wonderful place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday and take a breather into a wonderful place with delicious food!
