5/5 Don’t forget to try the Bobbie! It’s Thanksgiving every day at Capriotti’s!
Usually I try to avoid sandwich places like the plague because you think you’ve seen one sandwich place, you’ve seen ‘em all. Well not so at a little shop that had taken over the old Quizino’s spot right across from the Mission Valley Mall. It’s a nicely designed sandwich shop to give you that old east coast feel. East coast simulated delis are littered all over the West coast but this one is worth checking out.
You’ve got the dark wood tables, the brick walls. It even comes complete with a fresh pickle jar on the counter. Pretty upscale and clean with a soda fountain and chip display but nothing out of the ordinary right? WRONG!
Capriotti’s offers a wide variety with both Vegetarian and Omnivore selections with a kid’s menu as well. For those not wanting the carbs, there are a good number of salads to take care of your appetite. If you don’t see something you like, they have a make your own sandwich selection or you can just ask and they will make it for you! Sandwiches come in small (9 inches), medium (12 inches) or larger (20 inches) on a fresh and crunchy bakery soft hoagie roll. Prices range from seven to fourteen dollars but they are worth their weight as each one is piled high with flavorful ingredients that will take care of your stomach’s demands. We got to take a look at the meat choice and ham, fresh Italian sausage. Slow roasted beef and fresh pastrami are only a few of the selections available for sandwiches. The roast beef stood out in particular as it basted in its clear brown fat flavored juices. YUMM!
When you look at the menu there are several sandwiches here that look and taste like a heart attack waiting to happen. Hot juicy pastrami that is sliced just right, piled high on a bakery soft bun, oozing with juices. There are several turkey sandwiches that have fresh home-made turkey chunks, all juicy and flavored with special seasonings to give it that nice flavor when you take the first bite. Not dry or tasteless like some places out there.
Capriotti’s turkey is what made them famous. Each lovely hand carved slice is from 100 percent turkeys that are roasted in the oven; not turkey breasts or loaves but honest to god birds that you would eat on that special day in November. Their famous sandwich is the Bobbie which consists of turkey, savory stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayo. The meal sounds simple enough but this sandwich shop gets it right. The flavors are layered in such a way that this homemade thanksgiving tradition is on the market. It’s hot juicy and tender with just enough kick from the cranberry sauce to give that satisfying sweet and sour taste without overpowering the sandwich.
I have tried the Bobbie, the Cran-Slam Club, the hot pastrami and the Grilled Italian. All winners in my book and a small was enough to keep me going for most of the afternoon that dinner wasn’t really on my mind.   If you want a good sandwich from Subway, fogettaboutit!
