Rating:4 out of 5. A taste of down home cooking in Southern California. Food sure to fill your stomach and delight your tastebuds.
BBQ republic is a delightful place that we visited in Carmel Mountain Ranch that was clean and bright and had the feeling of a nice restaurant. The walls were painted a pale yellow with a nice dark wood trim. There was plentiful seating and an outdoor patio for those who wanted to be in the great outdoors. Like all good BBQ places, the provide you with a table of seasonings, extra sauce and an almost necessary tool; a roll of paper towels.
The menu here was extensive; you can pick your own meats on a platter or you can just get a simple BBQ sandwich with either pulled pork, chicken, brisket or tri-tip. You can also pick various sauces to go with your meal and there were a boatload of sides to go with it from buttery sweet potatoes with brown sugar to down home hush puppies that had an extra crunch that just made it that much more delicious. You would go up and place your order either to go or dine in. If you choose to dine in you are given a number and then you will wait at your table and a server will bring you the meal.
I was delighted with my food when it arrived. It was piping hot and presented beautifully on a plate. Usually most grab and go joints don’t take the time and detail to present you with an appetizing plate. I ordered the brisket and the chicken. I was excited to see grill marks on my chicken and eagerly cut open this delectable morsel to see the juices just dripping from the tender meat. I could also see the sauce coated the outer skin and caramelized the skin so it was sweet and vinegar with a hint of spice. For my side I was presented with a huge sweet orange yam baked to perfection with cinnamon sugar butter. The yam was just as tall as my plate and topped with the fluffy whipped butter that was melting into the folds of billowy orange goodness. Surprisingly with all this extra stuff on my yam it was not super sweet but just enough to satisfy that sinister craving for sugar. The brisket was no exception, tender juicy and melted in my mouth. I like extra sauce on my BBQ beef and I took advantage of the condiments. One thing I would like to mention is the price is pretty nice here for good BBQ. One can order a two item combo with side between $11.99 to 13.99 and also they have all you drink soda fountain, ice tea. sweet tea and lemonade. Can’t find that in too many places anymore since the recession. Dessert was a no joke at this BBQ place. A light and fluffy bread pudding bathed in vanilla caramel sauce completed by meal. This brick of perfection was airy and full o f flavor. The consistency was that of a true custard; light and airy. It was full of plump raisins and nuts yet light as an angel food cake.
How was the service? It was perfect. You go, you order, your food is brought to you, you eat and then clear the table. Bing Bam Boom done! . I would recommend it to anyone looking for some good BBQ at some great prices.
