Rating: 4 out of 5   The gore hound in all of us keeps this movie on everyone’s Halloween must-see movie list.

The basis for this movie is a short story by the master of classic horror, HP Lovecraft. When Dr. West shows up to an un-assuming college to  study the subject of death.  No one takes a liking to him;  probably the bit about studying dead bodies.  I should also mention that he’s creepy as hell.  He is waist deep in research of his own looking for the ability to bring dead bodies back to life. He gets a helping hand from a young doctor and his main squeeze, but they are in over their heads with gore, death and all around creepiness to follow.

The mood of the flick is that of a (very lightly)  polished B-movie; the characters seem to be cookie-cutter molds of other horror movies of the time. Although this might seem like a bad thing, it really isn’t. Characters are very  relatable, with the exception of Dr. West.  One can  genuinely feel their pain and terror.  The special effects is where this classic shines.  In spite of  their primitive nature,  these old-time methods of filming  convey the a cringe worthy effect in most anyone who watches.  With the suspenseful revealing of certain scenes and the blood spurting in others…it is the true reason this film remains a classic. The gore hound in all of us kept this movie on everyone’s horror and gore-fest list.
