Messy business, that Mira Mesa Crab Hut

There is a new place in town, sitting right in one of Mira Mesa’s malls. The place goes by the name of “The Crab Hut”, and well, I think they are going to be stealing a lot of clients from the Popeyes & McDonalds that sit nearby.

Not more than a couple of weeks old, the Crab Hut sits in the space where the Baja Fresh used to be. There have been signs letting everybody know what was to come, building much intrigue and expectation. Finally I went, this past Wednesday.

Right off the bat I knew this place must be special. If you live in San Diego, you know that one of the most popular restaurants in the whole county is Phil’s BBQ. Phil’s always has a line of people waiting to get a seat, much like the post office; the line will be there every day whether there is sun, snow or rain. The Crab Hut, not unlike Phil’s BBQ was packed. My friends, the ones I went with, told me that it is a normal occurrence and that it could have been much worse.

The menu offers seafood. If seafood is not your forte, if it’s not something you are dying to eat, then the Crab Hut is probably not the restaurant for you. The menu includes things from Snow Crab to Lobster, Clams and Shrimp. Fish unfortunately does not make it into the menu.

I being “cheap” by ordering the least expensive item in the menu ($9/pound) ordered shrimp. Here at the Crab Hut they don’t only boil your seafood, but they add spices and even spiciness. Since I couldn’t make up my mind on what kind of spice I wanted, I ordered what they call “The whole-shebang”, which is pretty much every spice mixed together.

Surprisingly, at least for me, the food is delivered to your table in a plastic bag, reminding me of the prize goldfishes you can win at the fair. The bag is filled with your choice sitting in a pool of the juices and spices.

Trying to eat my shrimp was messy, boy was it messy, my hands were filled with juices, plus the shrimp was a squirter. Lucky for me, the restaurant supplies its customers with eating bibs so that you don’t get your clothes too dirty. I guess they don’t know me that well, I always get dirty…I’m not proud; I just acknowledge it.

Overall, the food was delicious. My friends ordered 2 pounds of shrimp, while I only ordered a single pound. When I received my bag of food I was a little disappointed on how little it seemed to be; I even mulled over the thought that I should order something else or more shrimp.  Surprisingly, a single pound was enough to have me begging for sweet mercy. That was a very filling pound of full shrimp (head, legs and all), I was barely able to finish it as it was. After much crying and shame from being taunted by my buddies for not finishing my food, I ate it all.  I really liked it, and now I need to go back, maybe this time I will bring a camera and show you people what it really is like. Till then, take my word for it, and go check it out.
