Today marks the 100th birthday of the great Julia Child. Child is most recognized for bringing French cuisine to the American public with her show The French Chef.   The show which premiered in 1963 was produced and broadcast by WGBH public television station in Boston, Massachusetts.  It aired from February 11, 1963 to 1973 and was one of the first cooking shows on television.

Not only was she a TV star but also  Julia Childs  had a slew of cookbooks, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, was a two-volume French cookbook  written by Simone Beck , Louisette Bertholle, and Julia Child. It was  published by Knopf in 1961 (Volume 1) and 1970 (Volume 2). Julia Child’s goal with this book was to adapt sophisticated French cuisine for mainstream Americans. The collaboration of this cookbook proved groundbreaking strides in contemporary cooking and has since become a standard guide for the culinary community.

On August 13, 2004, Julia Child died of kidney failure at her retirement community home, Casa Dorinda, in Montecito, two days before her 92nd birthday.
