Green Eggs and Ham @ IHOP
by Carol Sweda
Sometimes you just need to go back to your childhood and enjoy the simple things that you ate. We get so caught up in eating only at the best wine bar or gourmet restaurant that we forget about our roots. How many of you have family memories of a Sunday morning, going to IHOP with your Mom and Dad and getting a stack of pancakes with flavored syrup and lots of real butter melted all over. We didn’t care about our figures then (because we didn’t have one) and the menu didn’t list the number of calories you are about to devourer.
Well this weekend I had a childhood moment. Took my grown son to IHOP and ordered the child portion (to save calories) of the LORAX promotional green eggs and ham and a blueberry ice cream cone with a pancake stuffed inside. Yummy eggs! Dr Seuss you’re a genius. My son had a more sophisticated chicken crepe that was also very good but not as much fun as my meal. Except when you got to the cone…..
We both ordered one. And it was kindergarten cupcakes baked in waffle cones for birthdays all over again. The added blue berry topping was a bit sweet but who cared at that point. I was willing to go into a diabetic coma to finish this wonderful childhood treat. I even finished my son‘s cone.
IHOP brought back some great childhood memories of days no longer. Oh and by the way I never looked to see how many calories where in that cone…… At 60 something talking to my son about the “olden days” meant more than my figure. So take your children young or adult to a nostalgic restaurant, IHOP and feel the warmth.
