FREE workshops and networking opportunities for high schoolers interested in the film industry

The San Diego Film Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2012 San Diego Film Festival will host the 7th Annual CONNECT – The Filmmaking Experience on Friday, September 28, 2012 at Reading Theater in the Gaslamp. CONNECT is a program designed to introduce Junior and Senior high school students interested in film, to top film industry professionals for an intimate day of workshops and networking.

A few top industry professionals taking part in the exceptional educational opportunity include casting director Eliza Roberts, actor Marissa Quinn from the highly anticipated Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, and actor Saginaw Grant from The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp, just to name a few!

Schedule of Events for CONNECT – The Filmmaking Experience:

Storytelling Panel 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

It all starts with an idea, then a story, then a script. Hear from industry professionals on the process of concept to script. Paul Harris Boardman screenwriter of the Exorcism of Emily Rose and producer writer of the new film Devil’s Knot explains how to go from your concept to a script.

Shorts Program 9:35 – 11:30 a.m.

Students will have the opportunity to screen a series of shorts from the festival and participate in a Q&A with the filmmakers.

Networking Luncheon – 11:30 – 12:30 p.m.

Students will enjoy a catered lunch while having the opportunity to meet several colleges and universities that have film and television programs and to continue the Q&A with filmmakers from the Shorts Program. Ask questions, get feedback on projects, and learn about the various college programs and job opportunities that exist in the industry.

Student’s Choice of Breakout Session – 12:30 – 2 p.m.

Editing with the King

Many independent filmmakers are their own editor at the beginning of their career. Come hear from the Final Cut King himself as he presents tips he has learned in editing as well as take a step-by-step tour of the tutorials he has available online!

Making Your Film a Reality

Come learn about crowd-funding and how it can help you reach your goal for funding for your next project! Hear from local filmmakers who have benefited from such crowd- funding sites as Kickstarter and Indie-Go-Go.

Phone Apps & Filmmaking

The world of filmmaking has been drastically changing with the emergence of phone applications that allow you to shoot an entire film on your phone! Come learn what apps are the best and how to make the most of your phone and filmmaking. Dennis R. Lorrig of Struans Group Inc. explains the new apps available for filmmakers and how to best utilize them.

Business Acting

Join casting director Eliza Roberts as she speaks with actors Ruben Chato Hinojosa Jr. (The Sorrow), Saginaw Grant (The Lone Ranger) and Marisa Quinn (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn 2) about the business of acting.

The San Diego Film Festival is scheduled for Wednesday, September 26, 2012 – Sunday, September 30, 2012.  For the first time, the Festival will be held at two venues: the Reading Theater in the Gaslamp Quarter (701 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, 92101), and the Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla, Sherwood Auditorium (700 Prospect Street, La Jolla, 92037). Tickets start at $14 for pre-sale/$16 at the door, and go up to $75 for a one day pass, and range up to $300 for a Festival VIP Pass to all screenings, premieres, events, and panels on all days.  A dramatic expansion this year, Festival organizers anticipate hosting over 100 film screenings.
