Located in the 4S Commons Marketplace in 4S Ranch is a small BBQ place against the typical upscale backdrop of a strip mall. The place is named Brett’s BBQ and it is unlike any other BBQ joint in San Diego. The place is small, quaint and clean. It’s BBQ not fine dining, so don’t expect to get that experience here. The smells coming out of the kitchen are definitely the first indication of something different. It’s not your typical spicy and sweet smell of sauce. The first thing that tantalizes the senses is the fragrant smoke and meat wafting in the air.Â
You get a good variety of meats; chicken. pork, beef, salmon, sausage. You also get your choice of cuts: spareribs. babybacks, beef ribs, pulled meats, rope sausage. They have sandwiches, platters and if you’re not too full, a variety of sides that would make your head spin. This is one of the few places where I found corn pudding. It’s a delicate savory dish from the south and east coast. Nice and firm baked dish with sweet creamed corn and butter.
The prices here are a bit higher than normal but the quality of food is worth it. I was able to sample a bit of their fare for $22.00 which included 2 sides, 1 quarter chicken (white or dark), 1 portion of Beef brisket, 1 portion of pulled pork, 2 ribs (spare or beef) or ¼ rack of babybacks. Let me tell you that was A LOT of food for one person. It is something that you want to share and a great bargin to have a little bit of everything (great if you are trying out a new place).
Now what you have been waiting for. WHAT ABOUT THE BBQ! Yes, yes the BBQ… Well, if you are a BBQ officiado then you know of the various types. If I had to place my money on this I’d peg this as a Kansas City/Texas BBQ flavor. The meat is juicy and succulent and has a nice carmelized crust. The chefs baste their cuts in BBQ marinade before smoking. Then the natural sugars create that beautiful burnt coating that seals all these flavors in. But don’t just take my word for it. Take a look for yourself
