Directed by first time feature documentary filmmaker Alexia Anastasio, “Adventure’s In Plymptoons!” attempts, and greatly succeeds in mapping out the early inspiration, journey, and now successful routine of artist, animator and Oscar Nominated (Short Animation Category “Guard Dog” and “Your Face”) Bill Plympton.  Anastasio, a fan herself, takes us all the way back to his Oregonian childhood on a five acre plot of land by the Clackamas River to his move to the Big Apple and through his success as an unapologetic and, in his words, incredibly ambitious and tenacious independent animator.
Various interviews from friends, family and colleagues, as well as Plympton himself, treat the viewer to a personal and well crafted story, as well as plenty of anecdotes to satisfy curiosity. Interviewees include Matthew Modine, Moby, “Wierd  Al” Yankovic, and Chris Wedge.
Bill Plympton is most familiar to my MTV generation for his animations on the channel featuring mutating characters jerking around in colored pencil. Â Beyond iconic, those toons defined our sense of true animation and what indie artists strove for. Plympton was, and continues to be a hero to the “pure” artist, for those opposed or afeared of the monster that is CGI, famous for turning down a $1,000,000 deal from Disney for no other reason than the fact they would own anything he drew for them. Â Using humorous and explicit sex, horrific violence, and his genius sense of life’s humor, Plympton sets the bar for cartoons that conform to nothing but the artists standards and expectations, easily meeting and surpassing the audiences as well.
